Aquatic Lab Sessions Vol.1

Aquatic Lab's debut compilation is in stores now! Featuring tracks by Zed Bias, Caspa, Cotti, P-Vans, Rusko, Spherix, and more!

The dubstep virus has spread and mutated over oceans and across continents in the past 5 years. At its furthest point, the virus has reached Austrialia and it's premier dubstep outlet, Aquatic Lab. Label owners Farj and Paul Fraser have assembled a stable of top UK producers mixed with the best Australia and New Zealand have to offer. 'Sessions Vol.1' showcases the talents of new producers Flash, Vista, P-Vans, Twitch and KIla Mega Giga Tera next to established UK steppers Zed Bias, Cotti, Seven, Caspa & Rusko. The set is well balanced between rampant club joints and home listening use, moving from Moving Ninja's ominous beatless opener 'Ankoku Butoh' to the mellow vibes of Flash's 'Right Here' onto runnin' techno-step from Vista and Zed Bias' with forward leaning killer 'Colditz', while outright anthems come on Cotti's dancehall message 'Nah Go Dung Deh' and Caspa & Rusko's 'King George'. Based on their quality values and tune selection, we'd have to rank these guys up next the likes of Tectonic or Tempa for all the Dubstep heads. Recommended!

Available on CD, Vinyl and mp3

Coki & Loefah at Sandwiches

Sandwiches very proudly present two of the biggest names in dubstep:

Coki & Loefah (DMZ / UK)

Coki is a dubstep producer and DJ hailing from London, UK. He forms one half of Digital Mystikz, a dubstep partnership together with Mala, also working alongside Loefah to produce DMZ, a dubstep sound and night deep in the heart of Brixton. Perhaps best known on the commercial scene for the smash hit 'Night' which was co-produced by fellow dubstep DJ/producer Benga, Coki is constantly carving out the future of bass culture. The beat was so catchy that it was massive in the club and rave scene, and barely a grime set passed without hearing the distinctive sound at some point.

Loefah is without a doubt a bastion of dubstep. His contributions to the DMZ imprint could be considered key moments in the evolution of the genre; whilst his remixes for Skream (on Tempa) and his recent Tectonic outing only serve to enforce this belief.
Unlike other producers, Loefah's bass excursions don't venture into the wibbly wobbly sub-aquatic realms. Instead they attempt to shatter the listener's rib cage with frequencies that could be used by French riot police.

Kode 9 with Strictly 138

The absolute evolutionary godfather of dubstep, KODE 9 is on his way to Aotearoa to take everything you thought you knew about the sound and flip it around, bringing you symphony of sonic seduction!

Kode 9 has nurtured dubstep music since day one, shaping its definition through founding the record label HYPERDUB. This imprint has given artists BURIAL, ZOMBY, IKONIKA, FLYING LOTUS and KODE 9 the strong voices needed to deliver an even stronger message: music that drowns out your expectations and resonates with your emotions.

In 2006 the underground music world was astounded by Burials groundbreaking debut, which was awarded 'Album of the Year' status by THE WIRE magazine, and described as an absurdly addictive sonic opiate - a feat that would not have been possible without Kode's support. Out of this success, the HYPERDUB label has brought many ruff and revolutionary artists to our consciousness, and is refusing to adopt a formulaic approach to the sound.

Kode's critically acclaimed debut album, 'Memories of the future' featuring Spaceape, has also been at the forefront of his exploratory approach, establishing his role as an artist, author, and lecturer on audio culture. It's an interest that spans from grime emcees waging war with a mic to the US army waging war with advanced sonic weaponry. "It’s about the use of sound as a weapon. It’s about collective grass roots, tactical media, pirate radio, network culture, DIY media...”, an attitude that will ensure a night of auditory adventure.

KODE 9'S WELLINGTON DEBUT is your opportunity to witness an evocative artist that "vibrates the bits that other djs don't reach". The Strictly138 crew, KAPS, P-VANS, STEPPA-D, THIEF and EXCELLE will support the night with a selection of explosive New Zealand dubplates for the courageous dancefloor soldiers. Nothing else matters but this night!

Get hyped for the HYPERDUB and get ya HYPERDANCE on!

warning: heavy sub pressure inside the ride

Artwork update

Artwork and poster design for the upcoming Freq Nasty show in Wellington.

What a great Christmas and New Years it has been! A satisfying ending to what i personally thought was a pretty shitty year, with some exceptions. 2009 is here now, and I'm determined to ensure its utter awesomeness.

What have we been up to since the last update? Other than Weta work? Well, went to Rhythm and Vines over the break, up in sunny Gisbourne - and did some Photography work while we were up there. What a great experience! It was our second time spending our new years there and it always delivers with such a nice vibe, great weather, music and just generally lots of fun.
I am actually trying to find some time to work on an XML/flash gallery to display some of pictures i took, once i am able to work out all the details. So fingers crossed i can get that all together.
In the meantime, here's some of the ones i took amongst those taken by others at the official R&V website gallery or ths link from the New Zealand Herald.

As you can see, Phil has been hard at work with his DJ'ing and production with his Strictly 138 crew with the Upcoming Ghost Dubs TRUTH gig, and we have been working on artwork for the 2009 FreQ Nasty Orientation tour, He's playing here in Wellington on the 5th of March and it shall be a rather excellent night!

So i think that's about it, project wise that's all i can report (without getting into trouble) Belated love and happy new years to all.

peace,
-Jamesmogg

tracklisting

a. Black sheep
b. V Dub
c. Weta cave
d. Panic attack VIP
e. Weight Break
f. Searching for sun

P-Vans debut Black Sheep EP is being released this Friday on Wellingtons premiere Dubstep & Electronica label Bassweight Recordings. The initial release is available exclusively on www.beatport.com for the first 6 months then is distributed to all the wider online music stores including digital tunes, juno download and I tunes. There will also be a follow up CD album hitting the stores next year which will include brand new exclusive P-Vans tracks and remixes by other local NZ Dubstep artists.

The Black Sheep EP is a compilation of tunes that have been tested on dubplate for the last 2 years and featured in almost every P-Vans DJ set around the country. The overall vibe of this EP is a blend of dark and haunting moods, atmospheric and quirky orchestral vibes, to laid back summer dub bass. The EP has received DJ support from many of NZ's finest dubstep DJ's including Jason Hawson, Frosty Boy, L Que, J Red, Oogun, Evil and Undertow and has received radio play from Radioactive 89fm, RDU and George FM. The EP is packed with dance floor fillers including the massive "Black Sheep" which has been called for rewind in almost every P-Vans set. Tunes such as V Dub and Weta Cave bring the highly swung atmospheric 2-step rhythms and deep bass instrumentation while Weight Break delivers a Phat punchy rolling break-beat monster for the peak time dance floors.

The Black Sheep name and cover artwork has many sub surface metaphors. "Although we have been burnt in some way or another we still stand tall and never give up" - P-Vans. photographed by Wellington photographer Paul Redican and chosen by P-Vans himself this dark and moody image gives a visual interpretation of the vibe of the Black Sheep EP. Mastered at Transition studios in South London these tracks shine with crisp warm sound with earthquake worthy sub bass guaranteed to test any gigantic rig.

Over the last 4 years P-Vans has grafted away at his own unique sound and has played a major part in shaping the Dubstep sound in NZ along with his crew Strictly138 and other NZ crews and DJ's: Subtle Sound system, Frosty Boy and Dubstep Alliance.

Shouts: my girl Rachel, my family and freinds, Kaps, Thief, Steppa D, Oogun, Frosty Boy, Undertow, Jason Hawson, Ill Figa, L Que and J Red, Ekim, J Kon, Excelle, Josie B, Double Negative, FreQ Nasty, Tayo, Zed Bias, Aquatic Lab, Moggey, Sandwiches, Optimus Gryme, Olly @ Bassweight recs and all the Wellington Massive for coming to our gigs and supporting original NZ music.

P-Vans - Twist Perception

With a serious studio upgrade and allot more concentration and effort on the music production front lately I have managed to russle up some new tunes focusing on harder edged spooky atmospheres, energetic bottom end bass weight rhythms and minimal tough beat structures.

With a return to my love of straight up spacial, jiggy, weighty, soulful 2-step and breakbeat influences these latest tunes have been a bit of a reflection of some of my favorite elements in dance music and simply a vibe that strays away from rinsed Ecstasy and bzp muppets with no dancefloor etiquette, sleazy pop cliche's and disinterested party goers.

It's the best thing to have someone on the dancefloor at a gig appreciate and enjoy your DJ set mainly because they are feeling your original music. So my motivation to rock parties is now largely built on that, Playing your own exclusive dubplates to a crowd that cares is an amazing feeling and it really builds motivation not only for you as a DJ, but for the crowd to keep on movin and experiencing new fresh music from the local scene also. Plus it puts a shit load more energy in to your DJ set.

Tunes I have done recently are up on my P-Vans myspace page.
recently "Ghost Pennies" has been signed to local mp3 label "Bassweight Recordings" an upcoming Wellington Dubstep label which will soon be available for purchase at Juno records
in the coming months. Black Sheep, and a new fresh one Twist Perception I'm looking to have cut to Dubplate through Transition mastering studios within the next month.

Ghost Dubs has been happening every season down at Tupelo since late 2006 which focuses on the roots of Subbass driven music known as "Dubstep" featuring a broad variety of DJ's and producers each bringing something unique to a vibing, fresh, open minded and enthusiastic dancefloor with quality heavyweight soundsystem. Next installment of Ghost Dubs "Spring Edition" is happening on Saturday the 10th November featuring Welly's own local lineup: P-Vans, Steppa-D, MC.Tekka, Exelle, UKnw,Theif and Funkdamunk. Stay tuned.

More about FreQ Nasty:

FREQ NASTY BIO

From the days of Breakbeat music's origins, FreQ Nasty has established himself as one of the scene's pioneers, producing many of the genre's defining moments. As Breakbeat came into its own, FreQ Nasty's tunes remained ahead of the pack and now he is on the cutting edge of the FutureStep movement, a chaotic loose assemblage of sonic renegades steeped in the sounds of breaks, dubstep, rock, ragga, grime and funk – twisting just about anything that moves the masses into new forms for the dancefloor. Chopping in and out of slow motion Halfstep beats, he’s creating a sound that’s only similarity to Breaks is in the spirit that spawned the genre… to twist the fuck out of whatever’s on hand to create something fresh to the ear, full fat for the feet, and free on the mind…..watch yo ass follow in 2007!!

A UK resident by way of Fiji and New Zealand, FreQ Nasty started his career at underground record label Botchit & Scarper in the late nineties and has gone on to release a slew of cutting-edge records through labels such as SKINT (as a label mate of Fatboy Slim), Finger Lickin records, and Adam Freeland’s Marine Parade (as High Pryme with BLIM). Whilst tinkering with the back end of dance music culture from the depths of South London's Peckham and Brixton to Whitechapel in East London, where human interaction is at its most raw and hungry, he's carved a radical aural geometry out of uncut bassline material and diamond-tipped Breakbeats, crafting the sound of inner-city danger and excitement into some of the toughest dancefloor music of the millennium.

FreQ began gestating the Breaks sound at Jungle/Drum&Bass label SOUR in the late 90’s. This new sound rolled with the same rough-edged attitude and dynamism as drum and bass, but at a slower more fusion friendly tempo incorporating elements of Jungle, HipHop, Techno, Bashment, Electro, Garage, all with the space and bottom end of Dub and Reggae -‘Breakbeat’ as we now know it. FreQ’s genre-defining debut album FreQ’s Geeks and Mutilations launched him into 1999. Fuelled by his releases like ‘Boomin’ Back Atcha’ and ‘Freq-a–zoid’, Breakbeat flourished and so did he, punching out the slithering, galaxy-sized bassline of his remix of Steve Reich’s ‘Desert Music’, and retooling Sosounde’s Metisse’ with fellow pioneer BLIM. Since then the likes of Fatboy Slim, Kelis, Filter, and KRS One have all felt the benefit of a Freq Nasty re-rub. Past collaborators have been artists as diverse as Roots Manuva, Reggae legend Junior Delgado, Public Enemy, Rodney P, Switch/SolidGroove, Phoebe One and many more.

2003’s Bring Me the Head of Freq Nasty impacted right into the rubble of dance music, where genre distinctions were collapsing and orthodoxies disintegrating on an hourly basis. He then marched out on tour with the Video Nasty Experience, an eye-melting DVDJ/VJ fusion of graphics, typography and FreQ’s ‘dreaded’ cartoon likeness. This multi-screen attack on the senses was perpetrated by a hit squad of animation and motion graphic assassins – including the brother’s Mogg from Peter Jackson’s company Weta Digital, and Jamie Hewlitt’s Zombie Flesh Eaters. Album tracks ‘Amped’ and ‘Goose’ traversed genres effortlessly, being played by Breakbeat, garage, house, techno and electro jocks simultaneously in the same way that Timo Maas’s mix of Azzido Da Bass’s ‘Doom’s Night’ or Alter Ego’s “Rocker” was, tunes for discerning clubbers on any dancefloor. He is treading the same path now only levels ahead with his take on the Halfstep movement, a sound he first experimented with in 1999 on his debut album, and then again in 2003, remixing Kelis at exactly half the tempo of Breaks - creating a deep slow-motion bass roller that still kept the energy of the higher tempo inflection while playing with the beats the way Timbaland might if he munched pills on the weekend with Dillinja and George Clinton. As the Dubstep scene in London has flourished it seemed a logical stop-in for FreQ and he has been serving up heavy doses of the FutureStep sound in clubs - breaks dubstep or otherwise - across the world.

Proving that the ‘death of dance music’ is the best thing that’s ever happened to it, the next instalment of FreQ-Foolery is about to drop in the form of a FreQ Nasty Mix Tape early in 2007 that will bust out the next chapter of his sonic genre splicing. It aims to drag Breakbeat kicking and screaming to a place where those who are tired of rigid genre classifications can smash and grab some of the freshness they expect from their favourite Multi/Non Genre without having to hear the same tired formulas regurgitated by the same old names. “Expect mad vibes and different frequencies for those who wanna get the 2010’s underway now” says he of the hair antenna as he channels alien DNA into the musical genome of underground music.

As music attempts to negotiate the chaotic rewiring of popular culture and www revolution, FreQ Nasty has taken the magpie attitude of download culture to FreQsville, extending his repertoire in collaborating with Disco D (50 cent and TrickDaddy producer and GhettoTech kingpin), UK Dubstep stalwarts Luke Envoy and Virus Syndicate, Glitch uberlord Si Begg, Killers NYC label mates Stiffed, Mike Skinner's new HipHop prodigy Professor Green, Indie LowFi artist and Tricky muse/collaborator Costanza, NYC Punkrap MC Princess SuperStar, Fidget House maestro and MIA producer Switch, and underground UK HipHop star Lethal. Collabs in the pipeline include Drum‘n’Bass stars T-Power and DJ Die, and hotly tipped Grindy (Grime/Indy fusion) band Hadouken. We can even expect a couple of breaks collaborations, with RaggaBreaks cohort and Radio 1 DJ Tayo and the UK’s hottest snotty nosed breaks punks CTRL Z, just to keep the purists happy…. small chance of that! In masterminding this Mix Tape, FreQ has set the controls for the heart of Bass, taking along for the ride a ragtag crew of fellow sonic explorers with nothing but a razor sharp ear and a short attention span to navigate the journey.

Following (for UK release) in the spring ‘07 is the eagerly awaited latest instalment of the FreQ Nasty long player series, with a recut, re-visioned visual storm based on the Video Nasty Experience. The sound is a Myspace junky’s iPod stuck in a blender with equal measures of Dubstep tempos, Trashment aesthetics and Breakbeat intensity, garnished with guitar and vocals from some of London, New York, and LA’s finest. Some Indie, some HipHop some Spoken word, some Dance Hall, but all good… and all glued together with a healthy dose of the dub and funk that create the signature FreQ sound. Think the bastard grandchild of Bootsy Collins and Burning Spear lost in the “Electronica” section of a Lower Eastside guitar shop, the history of beat-based dance music colliding at slowmotion tempo with the intensity dial cranked to 11!

If you hear a rumbling on the horizon this summer put your ear to the ground and listen…. you might just get run over by a truck coming in the other direction, the sides scrawled with the words “FreQ was here…again!”

from drummer to DJ and back again

P-Vans is a familiar face round Wellington DnB and Breaks parties with the love of getting absolutely trollied and losing the plot on the dancefloor to heavy tunes. 4 years later nothing seems to have changed.

Big ups to all people in the Wellington dance music scene keeping it live, especially sandwiches and the people who paved the way before us. You know who you are. Much respect.

Baobinga Bio:

Worldwide gigs, including appearances at London's Fabric, Ministry of Sound, The End, San Francisco's 1015 - and many a sweasty basement inbetween! A BBC Radio 1 guest mix. Tunes that appear on hugely successful compilations, multi-million selling computer games and in the boxes of all the big names in breakbeat - and beyond. Releases on the top tear-out labels and a double nomination in the 2005 breakspoll awards. All this, AND a cheeky grin... everyone loves Manchester's Baobinga!

In the past two years, Baobinga has gained a reputation for pushing a unique and versatile sound that refuses to recognise boundaries. His sets take in everything from techno, dubstep, garage, house, breaks, hip-hop and D'n'B, and his productions have a similarly wide range of influences. From the anthemic 'Bashmment Track', which featured on the massive Freestylers Fabric Live CD, the amen-based monster that is 'The Session' (licensed to the Shut Up And Dance 'Breakbeat Elite' CD) through to the 4/4 stomp of 'Shake Yer Head' (the fourth release on Aquasky's 777 label) and the glorious swagger of 'The Feeling' (picked up by Electronic Arts for their FIFA Street computer game), Baobinga has become one of the names to watch for anyone interested in exciting, energetic breakbeat. His release on Supercharged, 'Know Ya / All Up In Your Head' was a collaboration with 30Hz and became a firm favourite with the Plump DJs and Atomic Hooligan, and just about everyone else! His recent collaborations with I.D. as 'Big Monster' are being released on the legendary Fat! label and have turned heads for their blend of tough breaks with emotive techno influences - as witnessed on Rite Of Passage and new single The Machine.

New projects on the pipeline include his Pablo Beatz alias, pushing the breakstep sound to new levels and attracting support from J Da Flex, The Plump DJs, Rossi B and Oris Jay, and an electro-house influenced album project with 30Hz as 'The Bodysnatchers' - the first fruits of which were picked up by Rennie Pilgrem for his Radio 1 Essential Mix (the utterly tuff yet superemely funky 'Rip Shit Up') and have already attracted the attentions of dance uber-label Positiva. 2006 will see Baobinga continuing to elude pigeon holes, push boundaries and get crowds jumping to his unique blend of beats and bass, worldwide.

30Hz bio:

Tough electro edged breakbeat from Bristol UK. In the all too often bland world of breaks 30Hz has a unique sound and style that sets him apart from the crowd. Taking influences from techy drum & bass, electro and the hip hop of his native America, 30Hz has built up his label Vertical Sound into one of the leading breakbeat imprints, releasing artists such as Circuit Breaker, Baobinga & Id, Smithmonger and of course his own productions. He has also released on some of the biggest labels in breakbeat and electro such as Supercharged, Satamile and Cyberfunk and his music has been featured in everything from Xbox games to prime time UK television to BBC radio 1 airplay. Recently his analogue-heavy sound has caught the ear of breakbeat supremo Meat Katie, and a series of singles for the mighty Lot49 label will be in stores later this year.

In gigs across Europe and America, 30Hz has shocked crowds with his trademark fast mixing style, assaulting the audience with energetic and bass heavy performances. As with his productions, his DJ sets showcase a wide range of styles that reflect his open minded tastes regardless of genres.

Over the past year 30Hz has been collaborating with Manchester based artist Baobinga to form "The Body Snatchers" project mixing ghetto tech attitude with breakbeat energy and electro house production.

30Hz and Baobinga are two of the leading lights of the 'tear-out' breaks scene, known for their fast paced and energetic take on breakbeat music. Their releases on labels such as Supercharged, Fat!, Cyberfunk and Vertical Sound are staples of the big names in breaks, and can also be found on Fabric Live compilations, multi-million selling computer games and on across the UK's airwaves thanks to BBC Radio 1. As DJs, they have performed across the globe, with regular gigs around the UK (including Fabric and The Ministry of Sound), as well as frequent trips to Europe and the USA.

In search of a fresh challenge, 30Hz (from Bristol / Washington DC) and Baobinga (a Mancunian) have decided to combine forces and create a new sound - The Body Snatchers project. Taking the sleaze of electro-house, the cheeky and quirky charms of ghettotech and the energy of breakbeat, this new style has won huge acclaim from everyone from Rennie Pilgrem and Meat Katie to The Autobots and The Breakfastaz. Filthy analogue bass and tuff, chunky drums combine with tongue in cheek vocals and deliciously deranged effects to cause guaranteed dancefloor madness.

Their first release as The Body Snatchers is out now on Vertical Sound - 'Rip Shit Up / Slampig' - and future releases are planned throughout the year, culminating in an album project. Their live show debuted at the massive ' nuskoolbreaks.co.uk' party at Hidden (London) in March and further enhances their ability to cause severe outbreaks of rump-shaking across the globe.

Up to Da Time - P-Vans

Ok so I finally got off my arse and decided to write another tune. Def much better production than my previous efforts. This tune will feature in our Bros Mogg film Beanz in bg of the Party Sequence along with the Beanz P-Vans remix Which DJ Nu also plays during the scene. Tune can be downloaded here on my myspace profile. This tune has an oldkool sci fi feel mixed in with a duo of Ragga UK MC's spouting "Up to da time! Up to da time! Up to the second day and night. You know we respond to the movements!" Total dancehall offbeat rhythym section at the breakdown. Check it!

Wicked start to 2006!!!

Wow!!! FUCKIN HEAVY! Amazing! That's all I can say about this gig. Darin McPHadden continues to amaze me with his next level sound and his ruggid party vibe. he blended a fine combination of unreleased Dub Reggae Breaks tunes from the likes of Control Z and Screwface and amazingly fresh Dubstep sounds from the likes of DJ Scream and Control Z!
I had the best time with free bar tab for doing the poster ;) perks of the job and with all good freinds. Everyone was having it large that night and on a thursday night! It was packed.
My P-Vans support set went primo and got increadibly hard hitting as the punters at Sandwiches packed on to the dancefloor. Highlights of my set were definately Merka's "Mystic Man" and Cantankerous vs Backstage Sluts "Fuckoff Pissoff" mixed in to Plump DJ's "Soul Vibrates" Massive Massive Massive! Big ups for everyone who made it out to this exlusive Badass Breaks night. Best night I'd had in ages with the best tunes I have ever heard in ages! More Massive Breaks gigs to come in the near future for Wellington. Stay tuned!!!
